Military RelocationTLE reimburses lodging and meals for up to 21 days during a CONUS PCS, capped at $290 per day. It covers the stretch after you arrive at the new duty station while you wait to move into permanent housing, which includes waiting on a purchase to close. It is not authorized for house hunting trips taken before the move begins.
There is a gap almost every military buyer walks into and very few plan for. Your report date is fixed. A VA loan takes roughly 30 to 45 days from accepted offer to funding. Unless those two calendars happen to line up perfectly, you arrive at the new duty station before you own anything.
My PCS to Camp Pendleton guide covers how much house hunting time you get and how to make those days count.
The question is where you sleep during that stretch, and who pays for it. The answer is better than most people assume, and it is a completely different entitlement from the one that covers your house hunting trip.
Two entitlements, two different answers
People conflate these constantly, and the difference is money.
| House hunting PTDY | TLE | |
|---|---|---|
| What it gives you | Non chargeable days away | Reimbursement for lodging and meals |
| Who pays for the hotel | You do | Reimbursed up to $290 per day |
| When it applies | Before the move officially begins | Around departure from the old station and arrival at the new one |
| How long | Commonly up to 10 days | Up to 21 days for a CONUS move |
So the trip where you go find the house is on your dime. The stretch where you are waiting on escrow to close is not. That single distinction is worth a few thousand dollars to a family that knows about it in advance.
The timeline, stage by stage
Here is how the sequence actually runs, and where the decisions sit.
- Before you clear the old station. You can use TLE days here too, for the nights after your household goods are picked up and before you leave. Most families burn nothing at this end and later wish they had planned it.
- Travel days. These are per diem, not TLE. Different line, do not mix them on the voucher.
- Arrival, offer accepted, escrow running. This is the main event. TLE covers lodging near the new duty station while you wait for the purchase to close. Receipts required, because this is reimbursement rather than money paid up front.
- Closing and keys. TLE stops when you move into permanent housing. If escrow drags past your 21 days, the remainder is on you, which is exactly why the closing date and the report date should be planned together rather than separately.
The 21 days can be split between the two ends however you want. Five at the old station and sixteen at the new one is a perfectly normal arrangement. There is no requirement to divide them evenly, and the flexibility is the useful part.
Where the two paths diverge
Compare two families arriving the same week in San Diego North County.
| Arrived with a home under contract | Arrived with nothing lined up | |
|---|---|---|
| Days in temporary lodging | Roughly 20 to 30, since escrow was already running | Often 45 or more, since the search starts on arrival |
| How much TLE covers | Most or all of it | The first 21 days, then nothing |
| Out of pocket exposure | Minimal | Weeks of lodging at full cost |
| Pressure on the decision | Low | High, and hotel fatigue drives bad choices |
That second column is the real cost of starting the search after you report. Not the search itself, but the lodging clock running out underneath it while you are trying to make a good decision.
Pro Tip: Book lodging that stays under the daily cap rather than assuming reimbursement covers whatever you spend. TLE pays up to $290 per day combined for lodging and meals, and anything above that is yours. An extended stay unit with a kitchen usually beats a standard hotel on both counts, because the meal side of the cap goes further when you are not eating out three times a day for three weeks.
Overseas moves work differently
If you are arriving from or heading to an OCONUS station, the program is TLA rather than TLE, and it is considerably more generous. TLA runs up to 60 days at the gaining overseas location with extensions commonly approved, and about 10 days on departure. It also requires verifying with your command every 15 days that you are actively seeking permanent housing.
For a veteran or service member rotating back stateside, the CONUS side of that move is where TLE applies. Claiming the wrong one slows the whole voucher down, so get the terminology right on the paperwork.
While you are looking at entitlements, check your dislocation allowance too. For 2026 an E-5 with dependents receives $3,548.02, paid as a flat amount rather than reimbursement. That money is frequently sitting unclaimed alongside closing costs a family is struggling to cover.

Ask Your Finance Office This
Two questions to ask before you book anything:
- "What is the TLE daily cap for lodging and meals at my specific location, and how many days am I authorized in total?"
- "How do I split my days between the losing and gaining station, and what receipts do you need on the voucher?"
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the military pay for a hotel while waiting to close on a house?
Within limits, yes. TLE reimburses lodging and meals for up to 21 days during a CONUS PCS while you are between permanent residences, and waiting on a purchase to close falls inside that. Beyond 21 days, the cost is yours.
Can I use TLE for my house hunting trip?
No. TLE is not authorized for a preliminary house hunting trip taken before the move officially begins. That trip runs on permissive TDY, which gives you the days but not the money.
Is TLE paid up front?
No, it is reimbursement. You pay the lodging, keep the receipts, and claim it on your travel voucher. Budget for the float, especially if you are also covering closing costs the same month.
What happens if escrow runs past my 21 days?
The remaining nights come out of pocket. This is the strongest argument for getting under contract before you report rather than after, and for asking your lender early what a realistic close looks like on your file.
